Nemasket Group expands aging support for adults with disabilities

The Nemasket Group is launching a new initiative to support older adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, thanks to a $1,000 mini grant from Fallon Health.

The “Living Well, Aging Strong” project is designed to help participants maintain their independence, health, and social connections as they age, according to a community announcement. The initiative is part of The Nemasket Group’s Community-Based Day Support Program.

As people with disabilities live longer, they often face challenges such as declining health, increased isolation, and barriers to accessing care. The Nemasket Group’s new program aims to address these issues by promoting wellness, independence, and a sense of belonging.

“We are thrilled to receive this funding from Fallon Health,” Jenny Duval, executive director of The Nemasket Group, said. “This grant allows us to expand opportunities for older adults with I/DD to stay active, healthy, and engaged. Aging should be a time to celebrate life, and this initiative helps ensure that those we support continue to live with dignity and purpose.”

The project was developed by staff who recognized the changing needs of older adults in the program.

“This project was born from our staff who recognized the changing needs of our older adults and sought a way to help them thrive,” Ericka Duckett, director of Day Services, said. “This funding will help bring this idea to fruition.”

Fallon Health, a not-for-profit organization, donates more than $1 million annually to community organizations in its service area through volunteering, in-kind services, and funding programs, according to the announcement.

“We’re committed to improving the health and well-being of our communities and are pleased to partner with The Nemasket Group in our efforts to eliminate barriers to health care and enhance health outcomes,” Cheryl Schmaltz, Community Engagement Manager at Fallon Health, said. “These grants are vital to our mission, and we look forward to working together to accelerate actions in this important area of focus.”

The Nemasket Group has been supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families for more than 40 years. The organization offers a range of services, including residential, day, employment, and family support programs.
